Varicose veins stripping is one of the methods currently used to treat varicose veins. Most varicose veins cause people little or no medical problems at all. They are usually considered only as a cosmetic issue. However, in some more severe cases additional problems may arise which will prompt a medical practitioner to take extreme action. With most cases of varicose veins stripping is the only alternative.

During the past ten or fifteen years, alternative ways of removing varicose veins have been developed and tried. However there is currently no information concerning the long-term effects of these methods. There is also no record of recurrence rate. The recurrence rate of varicose veins stripping however is only about five percent.

Some doctors recommend needle therapy, which involves the injection of a chemical into the vein. This causes the vein to collapse, effectively shutting off its use. It is known as sclerotherapy and is normally limited to small veins below the knee. It cannot be used on large varicose veins. It is also not used on veins that end at the groin or on obese patients. In the majority of these cases, varicose veins stripping are the only option of treatment.

The largest veins near the surface of the skin, which is the Saphenous veins can only be treated with varicose veins stripping. A surgeon will make two cuts, one in the groin and one near the ankle and pass a wire from the ankle to the open end near the groin for varicose veins stripping. Smaller veins are then tied off and a wire is run all the way up. The surgeon will grip the groin end and pull the vein out.

Varicose veins stripping surgery may require an overnight stay in the hospital and recovery can take as long as two to six weeks. During your recovery, you should begin short walking session under the observation of a doctor. These sessions usually take five minutes at a time for the first few days and will get longer as you recover from the varicose veins stripping operation. A person may return to work within two weeks after this surgery depending on their occupation.

Since 1999, a closure technique has been used in place of varicose veins stripping surgery. A catheter is inserted into the damaged vein. It applies a radio frequency to the vein wall. This will cause it to shrink and seal shut. When the vein has been put out, adjacent veins take over its duties to help restore normal blood flow from the legs. This procedure is now being used in place of varicose veins stripping as it is considered a minimally invasive procedure, but long term effects are not yet known.
